Earlier this month, Oikocredit USA kicked-off its grassroots movement with an event at Seattle Greendrinks, a non-profit organization that brings together Seattle's environmental community. This helped spread the word about Oikocredit's microfinance investment opportunities as an effective way to address the needs of the poor. The event was held in conjunction with Oikocredit's community building partners, Re-Vision Labs, and was a huge success, with over 500 people in attendance! Oikocredit USA Executive Director Terry Provence spoke and answered questions both about Oikocredit's specific role in microfinance and the industry more broadly.
Many were inspired to become involved with Oikocredit USA in the future, given its environmental standards, low interest rates to borrowers, and the large benefits observed from investing in the poor. Handouts may allow for immediate relief, but by helping small entrepreneurs finance their own businesses in a way not reliant on charity, they learn how to support themselves and their families in the long-term - and aren't these the kind of results we're looking for?
Oikocredit USA wants to spread this movement across the country, because every one of us can contribute to the fight against poverty. There are many ways to get involved - just check out our new website. We hope to see you at a similar event in the future!
