Young Enterprise Surrey Winners Invest in Oikocredit
19-05-2010
Firefly - a group of Sixth Formers formed a company to raise investment for microfinance, on top of their busy AS revision!
At the end of April, the University of Surrey hosted the Young Enterprise Surrey Finals. Over 60 student companies from schools across Surrey took part in this year's Young Enterprise Company Programme. Each participating company creates a product or service, sells shares, raises capital and then sets out to make a profit.
‘Firefly' from Guildford High School was named ‘Best Company of 2010'. Firefly's innovative scheme involved manufacturing and merchandising aromatherapy, gift and artwork products in the UK, to fund microcredit business start up loans to women in developing countries. Firefly made an investment in Oikocredit and the judges commented that they were highly impressed with Firefly's commitment to empowering women at home and abroad through sustainable business enterprise.
