Off-grid lighting company Barefoot Power has picked up awards in every category for at the Lighting Africa international conference held in Nairobi, Kenya this week.
An Oikocredit equity partner since 2006, Barefoot's focus is to replace dangerous and expensive kerosene lamps with low-cost rechargeable lighting products that use solar panels or rechargeable batteries. The Australian-based company is now partly Oikocredit-owned and has products in Kenya and Uganda.
Entrants at the off-grid lighting competition were tested and judged across four categories: room lighting, task lighting, best value and top performance.
Barefoot Power won first prize in the categories of room lighting, best value and top performing. The company also won a second prize in the task lighting category.
Oikocredit has been a major shareholder in Barefoot Power after investing AU$100,000 (€ 59,381) in 2006 and AU$300,000 (€ 178,145) in January last year. Barefoot's vision is to provide lighting to one million people by 2010 and five million people by 2013.
