Oikocredit promotes the SMART Campaign’s Client Protection Principles to encourage Oikocredit partners to stay true to their social missions, and ensure client welfare remains a top priority.
Earlier this year, the SMART Campaign launched a certification process to enable microfinance institutions (MFIs) to demonstrate adherence to the Client Protection Principles.
This week, Oikocredit’s manager of social performance Ging Ledesma is in India to assess partner Janalakshmi Financial Services in relation to these principles.
“This assessment in India is another reflection of our commitment to the principles to ensure that our partners do not harm clients,” said Ging.
The SMART Campaign strives to protect the rights of microfinance clients, and ensure microfinance institutions follow ethical principles that ensure clients can repay their loans, receive transparent information on financial products and are respected.
The Client Protection Principles are designed to create consistent practices and policies for the fair financing industry as a whole.
