UN launches International Year of Cooperatives

01-11-2011

The United Nations officially launched the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) with an event in New York yesterday.

The IYC aims to recognize the alternative way of doing business that cooperatives offer, and how a successful model means owner-members enjoy collective benefits.

The UN's theme is “Cooperative enterprises build a better world”, and no where is that more evident than in Oikocredit’s operations. Not only is Oikocredit one of the few internationally operating cooperatives with almost 600 members from around the world, it also has 288 cooperative partners.

Terry Provance from Oikocredit USA attended the launch, and said the IYC would be an excellent opportunity for Oikocredit to broaden awareness of the benefits of a cooperative society.

“As several speakers at the launch have said, we now have an opportunity to promote the cooperative model and strengthen awareness and support for cooperatives,” Mr Provance said. “For Oikocredit, almost a third of our partners are cooperatives that create powerful and sustainable economic and social institutions on the ground. We look forward to using this opportunity to highlight the history, successes and significance of cooperatives.”

Visit Oikocredit as a Cooperative to see how Oikocredit and our partners work together for a better world.
