Graduating from poverty

ASKI (Alalay sa Kaunlaran) is a microfinance organization providing credit to small entrepreneurs such as farmers, tricycle drivers, vendors and fisher folks on the Philippine island of Luzon. With help from Oikocredit, ASKI in 2008 began applying the Progress out of Poverty tool (PPI).

The PPI pilot showed that the longer entrepreneurs took loans out with ASKI, the lower their chances of falling below the national poverty line. This was confirmed in 2009, when ASKI conducted another PPI pilot. Comparing the first and the second survey provided objective data as to how many small entrepreneurs had graduated from poverty. For instance in Baler, one of ASKI's sub-regions, 47 clients were below the poverty line in 2009, down from 61 in 2008. The PPI results help ASKI to reach more clients belonging to the poorest layers of society, allowing the organisation to maximize its social impact.
