Rotary Foundation and Oikocredit working together for empowerment

13-04-2011

Oikocredit and The Rotary Foundation (TRF) have formed a strategic partnership to offer technical support to small entrepreneurs, microfinance institutions and their communities.

The new partnership will open up more opportunities for Oikocredit project partners to develop the practical capabilities of their organization and create community-based programmes with the assistance of local Rotary clubs.

"For many Oikocredit project partners, building skills and developing communities is an essential element of their mission," said Oikocredit Director Social Performance and Financial Analysis Ben Simmes. "Oikocredit partners are perfectly placed to deliver initiatives such as health and education programmes that benefit their communities."

Oikocredit will consult with its partners to gauge interest in working with Rotary in capacity building projects. Local Rotary clubs will then flag their interest in providing assistance, with the use of TRF funding. Oikocredit and TRF have made geographical priorities to explore opportunities for capacity building projects in Latin America and Asia. Oikocredit's role focuses on making the connection between Rotary clubs and its partners.

In 2007 Oikocredit coordinated a capacity building project between Netherlands-based Rotary District 1590 and a dairy cooperative in Kenya. With the help of these Rotary clubs, Githunguri Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society established two milk collection centres.

"The Githunguri project was a great success, and we hope this new partnership will see more Oikocredit project partners benefit from Rotary members' dedication, knowledge and commitment to empowering small entrepreneurs," Mr Simmes said.
